Robert Watts of Stamford (Lincolnshire)
Circa 1710
A rare early
eighteenth century English verge lantern clock by this well regarded
maker.
The lantern clock, or more correctly, chamber clock, was
the earliest form of domestic clock and was popular throughout the
seventeenth century. A much valued possession amongst the nobility
and the merchant classes.
This example by Robert Watts retains
the original verge escapement. Most unusually the short bob
pendulum swings within the posted frame*, and displays the time via
the original steel hand to the raised chapter ring over a well-engraved
centre.
Note:
Brian Loomes in a recent article refers
to ten Lincolnshire lantern clocks surviving, three of which are by
Robert Watts of Stamford. ("William Reeve of Spalding and the
oldest Lincolnshire clock" - Clocks Magazine Nov 2008).
Brian
Loomes is the author of "Lantern Clocks & their Makers".
A book that we highly recommend to anyone with more than a passing
interest in this genre of clock.
