Longcase Clocks
|
Thomas Field of Bath
Circa 1770
Oak
antique longcase clock with brass dial of eight-day duration.
Of
particular interest to those who appreciate good colour and original
patination, this example dates from Thomas Field's early years in
Bath.
The case is typical of Bristol style with a shaped
top to the trunk door, integral hood columns and retains the
original paper cut blind fret. The height is 85 inches.
Thomas'
London training is particularly evident in the high quality of the
dial and movement. The movement is of eight-day duration with
rack striking sounding the hours on a bell.
The time is displayed
via the original blued steel hands to the brass dial with raised silvered
chapter ring with Roman hour numerals, framed by exceptionally fine
gilded spandrels. The silvered dial centre is engraved in the
West Country manner with a romantic scene of a turreted house in a
landscape leading to a riverbank with a two-masted ship offshore.
There is a subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture.
