A Charles of London

Circa 1742

A rare early eighteenth century antique English pair cased verge pocket watch made by A Charles of London.

The gilded full plate movement is signed and numbered, and carries an early type of broad footed winged balance cock which is beautifully pierced and engraved.  The fine engraving continues on the foot and the plate around the silver regulator disc.  The movement is supported by square baluster pillars and has worm and wheel barrel set-up between the plates and a chain fusee.

The time is displayed via blued steel 'beetle and poker' hands to the enamel dial set out with Roman hour numerals within a band, and conventional minute numbering outside.

The silver pair cases are plain and in close to mint condition with original pendant and bow.  They carry matching hallmarks for 1742 (London) and the casemaker's mark - EL.

Diameter 50mm
