William
Bird of Seagrave (Leicestershire)
Circa 1760
An exceptional
George II period antique oak longcase clock by the noted maker, William
Bird.
This example has a particularly small well-proportioned oak case that has developed a fine rich natural colour. The hood door is centred by brass capped fruitwood columns, and the trunk door has a shaped top in common with other Leicestershire clocks. Fixed to the backboard is an original pulley for the pull repeat mechanism (see movement below). The height is 75 inches. The movement has been fully restored to the highest standard, goes for eight days on one winding and sounds the hours on a bell which may be repeated at will by pulling a cord attached to the unusual levered repeat mechanism. The time is displayed via the original blued steel hands to the brass dial with raised silvered chapter ring and Roman hour numerals. The silvered dial centre is signed "William Bird – Seagrave". The date is displayed by a third concentric pointer to the inside of the chapter ring. |
