Stephen Blackburn of Oakham
Circa 1720
This is
a rare early example of English provincial clockmaking by Stephen
Blackburn.
The richly coloured oak case has elegant proportions and interesting architectural treatment to the hood with turned columns, carved blind frets and caddy top. The trunk door has a shaped top which is reminiscent of the Queen Anne period. The height is 82 inches. The movement is of one day (30 hour) duration, and is rope driven through the original fruitwood pulley. The brass dial is framed by well cast crown and cherub spandrels, has a raised silvered chapter ring with Roman hour numerals and fleur de lys half hour markers, and is signed "Blackburn – Oakham". The time is displayed via the single blued steel hand. SOLD |
