Longcase Clocks
|
James Smoult of Newcastle Upon Tyne
Circa
1750
A George III period walnut longcase clock of good proportions
by this well documented maker, James Smoult.
This represents an interesting
alternative to those who can't afford a London clock of the period,
or might just prefer the character of a provincial-made piece.
The
exceptionally well-figured walnut case stands 89 inches high and has
a caddy top, turned hood columns with matching half columns at the
back, and long crossbanded trunk door.
The movement is of eight
day duration with rack striking, sounding the hours on a bell.
The
dial is signed "James Smoult - Newcastle" to a boss in the arch framed
by dolphin pattern spandrels. The raised, silvered chapter ring
is framed by well-cast corner spandrels and the dial centre contains
a subsidiary seconds dial, a date aperture, and ringed winding holes.
