Westmorland Cottage Clock (Quaker School)
Circa 1720
This
is a delightful example of early English provincial clockmaking, possibly
of Quaker origins.
It is interesting in being of joined construction
and has strong regional characteristics; with bold ogee mouldings
and a shaped top, long trunk door with walnut crossbanding, turned
hood columns and matching half columns to the back of the hood.
It has developed a pleasing warm original patination and has elegant
small proportions standing 81 inches high.
The ten inch brass
dial has a raised silvered chapter ring, well cast spandrels and a
date aperture* to the engraved and matted centre. The time is
displayed via the single blued steel hand.
The movement is of
one day duration with countwheel striking and sounds the hours on
a bell.
* The date aperture on this clock utilises the offset
wheel seen often on Lake District clocks and referred to by some commentators
as a "Westmorland Calendar Wheel".
